About Me

Picture

My name is Matthew J. Agnello. I'm an aspiring cinematographer and editor. I graduated from Boston University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Film and Television and a concentration in Japanese Culture. Since then I've worked on many sets and shows as everything from a PA to an AC, including QVC and the Dr. Phil Show. I've also worked as a DP for the student TV show Shadows, as well as a writer, technologist, and editor for Erato Music.

Statement - Filmmaking

In Kristof Kieslowski's 1979 film, Amator, a factory worker discovers his love for the camera. When asked if he wants to become an artist, his answer is simple: No.

That's me.

My passion is the camera and driving the look and feel of a project. I love shaping light, exploring movement, and creating form. But I would never consider myself an artiste. I'm really just a regular guy who happens to love filmmaking.

Film is manipulaton. For thirty seconds or two hours, a filmmaker grabs a piece of your vision and can inject any combination of colors and motion he or she wishes. And while one can't really get away from that manipulation, my goal is not to manipulate. My goal is to translate: to capture the beauty or terror or peace or humor I find in the world around me so that others may experience it as I do. And while I will underhandedly use the many tools of manipulation available to me -- sound, music, light, and motion -- the result will be a shared experience that no other medium can quite match.

I have an equal passion for exploring the possibilities of new media. Whenever I work on a project, I consider how it will be viewed in the future -- on cell phones, on iPhones, on portable media players, on the windows of subways, or on the inside of sunglasses -- and I try to produce content that will still be relevant in ten or twenty years.

In that time, everyone will have a high definition camera that they carry with them all the time and is constantly connected to the Internet with the ability to upload, watch, and edit content. Passive media like film will be one of many ways to experience a story. But it will also be part of a larger story. Audiences will watch movies, go to websites, play games, create mashups, and edit wikis all centered around a single experience.

As a filmmaker and a young person in the 21st century, this excites me. No longer bound simply to the images burned onto CCDs or silver halide, each person can translate his or her story and share that experience with everyone. Mine will simply be the world from my perspective. As Kieslowski once said: "one cannot tell about the world other than telling about himself."
